Review of Ascent from Darkness

Image
This was an interesting read, particularly for those interested in the occult, satanism, or spiritual things.  If you are a relatively new Christian, I would avoid this type of literature--spiritual things should not be toyed with.   Have a great Friday, -Steve Comments welcome below... Available at Amazon.com Ascent from Darkness: How Satan's Soldier Became God's Warrior [Paperback] By Michael Leehan 272 pages, $15.99 ISBN-13: 978-0849947032 Non-fiction Review by Steven King, MBA, MEd In Ascent from Darkness Leehan writes a compelling autobiography about his involvement in the sordid world of Satanism and his eventual surrender to Jesus Christ, as his Lord and Savior. Leehan writes in a very compelling style—which was hard to put down and could have been read easily in a two-day reading fest.  As a spiritual treatise it gets two things right: §   It reminds people of the reality of the spiritual world §   If affirms that no one is beyond God’s salvific...

Review of Jesus Loves You, This I Know...

Image
Perusing through a few books at a mobile book sale, I ran across this interesting book.  No matter what, Jesus loves us.  Maybe you needed to hear that today...or maybe, just maybe, one of your friends or family members needs this great lesson. Have a great Friday. Feel free to leave comments. -Steve Available from Amazon.com Jesus Love You, This I Know. By Craig Gross & Jason Harper Baker Books ISBN-13:  978-0801013294 196 Pages (Includes front and back matter) Review by Steven King, MBA, MEd It is easy for me to say that I believe Jesus loves you.  But if the truth is known, there have been many times in my life where I have felt that he didn’t love me.  True, many people had told me that Jesus loved me…that there was nothing I could ever do to not be loved by him.  During those times I was guilty of lobbing whimsical incantations of “Take heart, Jesus loves you,” at people experiencing low points.  Now I see the hypocrisy of saying ...

Review of Uncaged

Image
Available at Amazon.com Uncaged: A Thriller Paul McKellips Vantage Point ISBN-13: 978-1936467099 288 Pages (Includes front and back matter) Review by Steven King, MBA, MEd This month, America remembered the tenth anniversary of a terror attack which changed the world forever.  On that fateful day of September 11, 2001, most people can picture where they were with vivid clarity.  Our mouths hung agape as we watched commercial airliners become steered missiles—flown into the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon.  Do most people recall the events of early January 2009 with such alacrity? I doubt it. On January 19, 2009, The Washington Times carried a story of how an al-Qaeda camp was closed when unconventional weapons experimentation went awry.  Sources differ as to what exactly occurred in early January—intercepted communications allude to a breach of a sealed area and biological experimentation claiming the lives of 40 al-Qaeda operatives. The United States...

Review of Corpsman Up!

Image
The Vietnam War has left many ravaged by the psychological effects it produced. David Johnson is no different...he has a story to tell.  If you get this book, that is as much as you will like. The rest of the book is a tirade against God and Christians.  Mr. Johnson is angry and he wants you to know it. My review is below. Happy Friday - Comments welcome! -Steve Available at Amazon.com Corpsman Up!: A Marine Medic Struggles with War, God, and Patriotism  [Paperback] By David Johnson 404 pages, $25.95 ISBN-13: 978-0595521265 Non-fiction Review by Steven King, MBA, MEd In Corpsman Up , it is apparent that David Johnson is mad at a society that has let him down. Imagine joining the military as a young age and devoting yourself to the principle that all life is has worth.  The stories coming out of Vietnam are filled with just the opposite: there are plenty of ethnic groups service members encountered which are considered sub-human....

A review of Conquer CyberOverload

Image
If you're anything like me, you are probably way to busy with technogoodies in your life. I know I am... I had to put down my Android to write this. My review of an excellent book to help you is enclosed below. Comments welcome and Happy Friday! -Steve Available at Amazon.com Conquer CyberOverload: Get More Done, Boost Your Creativity, and Reduce Stress By Joanne Cantor 108 pages, $12.95 ISBN-13: 978-0984256808 Non-fiction Review by Steven King, MBA, MEd Perhaps my tardiness in writing this review will affirm I suffer from cyber-addiction—or at the very least—cyber-overload.  Earlier today, I read on my LinkedIn feed that FaceBook would probably unveil a new app for the iPad.  This seemed like good news since I regularly check my FaceBook via my desktop computer, laptop, iPad, and Android.  I agreed to write a review for Dr. Joanne Cantor a few years ago…once I received the book, I read it from cover to cover and then promptly placed the ...

Review of Rumors of God

Image
I love reading books about restoring a proper relationship with God.  The following review provides this very motif - if you think a good life with God is just a rumor, read this book...I am sure you will be surprised. Comments welcome & Happy Friday. -Steve Available at Amazon.com Rumors of God: Experience the Kind of Faith You´ve Only Heard About [Paperback] By Darren Whitehead and Jon Tyson 208 pages, $15.99 ISBN-13: 978-1595553638 Non-fiction Review by Steven King, MBA, MEd Given the angst which seems to pervade our world, it is feared by many that the best days of the church are behind Christendom.  To defeat this negativity, Darren Whitehead and Jon Tyson have written Rumors of God . This Prayer of Jabez esque book stakes its foundations in a prayer offered by Habbakuk, one of the twelve Minor Prophets.  In Habbakuk 3:2 we read: Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Renew them in our day In our time make them known; In ...

Review of Unbroken

Image
Every once in awhile, even an admitted bibliophile will read a book that makes you pause and say, "Wow." Such a book you read gently, maybe only allowing yourself a few pages at a time so you will not finish it too quickly.  Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is just such a book. If you've read, or seen, Seabiscuit you are familiar with her writing.  Until you have read Unbroken, you will not understand the power of her writing. Life's foibles will not seem to matter after you have read this incredible journey. As always--feel free to leave comments. -Steve Available at Amazon.com Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption [Hardcover] by Laura Hillenbrand 496 pages, $27.00 ISBN-13: 978-1400064168 Nonfiction Review by Steven King, MBA, MEd In 1936, Adolf Hitler had hoped that the Berlin Olympic Games would prove German superiority to the spectators of the world. Little did he know that track legend Jesse Owens, ...
